Powerful Free VST’s

The Fish Fillets

I love The Fish Fillets! i stumbled accross these on my search for simple to use VST Compression (as i was learning the basics of why i needed to use them). Needless to say a few days later they had sealed there fate in my choosen arsenal of VST effects, simply put even as a noob i could clearly see the diffrence theses babies made to my sound.

It didn’t take much longer to figure out what each knob and button was doing to the sound i was working on. In no time at all i was pushing these little power houses to there limits!

Blockfish

Official Information

BLOCKFISH is a versatile compressor with countless ways to shape the incoming audio. Unlike many other digital compressors, BLOCKFISH has ’soul’. It likes to bite, but it can be tamed easily once you’ve learned how to use its potential.You can remove the front plate and make further adjustments on the circuit board. Everything is possible: clean, transparent, loud, punchy, silky, subtle, fat. But still with a unique sonic character.

My Thoughts

This is a brilliant FREE VST (and even commercial oppressors) for pumping out your drums, kicks, snares, and even baselines, sythn’s, samples and effects. You can achieve that very lovely old school analogue crunchy / punchy warmth with ease.

Floorfish

Official Information

FLOORFISH is a simple expander / gate device, easy to set up and offers a broad variety of processing, ranging from slight expansion, backgound noise attenuation to extreme gating effects. What’s different from similar units is the ability to scan the source and adjust the transistion curve accordingly.

My Thoughts

This is my favourite VST for removing either kicks, snares, or hats from samples and loops. I also use this heavily (along with some clever EQ’ing) to separate songs for remixing. For example you can have 3 versions of the same tracks split by Low, Mid, and High frequencies, split across 3 tracks, very easily with the given presets they provide (Kick gate preset – lows, Snare gate preset – Mids, Hi Hats gate preset – Highs).

Spitfish


Official Information

SPITFISH is a dead-easy to use de-esser, aimed mainly at mono or stereo vocal tracks. Just like classic analog de-essers, this unit dynamically filters out harsh, annoying s-like sounds that would otherwise ’spit’ in your face.

My Thought

Out of the 3 plugins, i use this one the least. However like the description says, this is a superb and simple plugin for removing frequencies from all sources. Especially for vocals, high frequency instruments, and sharp sounds.

MGTriggerGate

My Thought

I used to use this a lot, when i was making more progressive trance music. It’s very easy to achieve some nice rythms for your basslines, synths, melodies, etc.

mgTriggerGate is a sequenced gate, similar to the trancegate effect found in reFX’ Vanguard. It has a little 16-step-sequencer for trigger impulses, is syncable to host tempo and all important parameters are automatable.

My Thought

The LFX1310 in is an absolute power horse VST, and it’s totally free. I especially love the Stereo & Bit Crush Effects, which i have used quite a bit on my Album and EP’s. THey are brillaint for tweaking real time automations on your drums, basslines, sythns, samples whatever it is you like. It comes with your complete collection of most used effects, from distortion, to reverb, delay to phasers, and this plugin is very CPU efficient!

LFX-1310 is a Free plug-in multi-effector including 24 types of algorithm and 3 serial slots. This freeware is the stand-alone version of Effecting Module of Ravity(S) & Ravity(R). Every algorithm realizes the very effect you have on your mind, and is fully optimized for low CPU load.

I’ve spend the last couple of months developing these templates to satisfy all my wildest dreams with Ableton’s new controller series.
